Comments on VDOT Candidate Transportation Projects/FY2008-2013/Six-Year
Improvement Program
October 31, 2006
Dear VDOT Programming Director:
Fairfax Citizens for Responsible Growth (FairGrowth.org) is a
non-partisan, county-wide citizens group concerned with development and
land-use issues and their impact on traffic, transportation, schools,
the environment, and other infrastructure and public services.
Our group supports strategies that will reduce reliance upon
automobiles wherever possible and that will promote more walkable,
bikeable communities. We are committed to seeing honest
transit-oriented development principles implemented and followed
throughout Fairfax County.
Bicycling is a form of transportation. Unfortunately, in many
places in the county, the choice to commute by bicycle can be a
perilous one. We urge VDOT to fully recognize bicycling as a mode
of transportation and to include bicycling lanes and more
bicycle-friendly features into new roads and road improvement
projects. We also urge VDOT to work to improve safe bicycle and
pedestrian access in the vicinity of multi-use trails, transit
stations, employment centers, and other popular destinations such as
shopping and educational facilities.
Sincerely,
Bicycling Subcommittee of FairGrowth's Transportation Committee
Fairfax Citizens for Responsible Growth, Inc.
