Bipartisan Support Grows
for "Significantly
Reducing the Density" of Planned Development at Vienna/Fairfax/GMU
Metro Station
Concerns Mount about Impacts on Transportation,
Education,
Environment, and Parks
August 9, 2005 Fairfax, VA – Fairfax
Citizens for Responsible Growth, Inc. (www.FairGrowth.org) today
announced that Delegate Steve Shannon, the Democratic incumbent
representing the 35th District of the Virginia House of Delegates, and
his Republican
challenger, Jim Hyland, have both signed FairGrowth's statement calling
for the "significant reduction" of the density proposed for a large
development at the southern end of the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metro
station. The statement cites concerns about impacts on
transportation; parks and recreational facilities; the environment; and
crowded schools. The 35th District includes the northern portion
of the Metro station. The full statement
is attached.
Vienna Mayor Jane Seeman and all other Vienna Town
Council members also signed the same statement as Shannon and
Hyland. The candidates join other members of the community who
have expressed similar concerns. The Providence District Council
and the Mosby Woods Elementary School Parent-Teachers Association are
among those that have called for alterations to the project, known as
Metro-West, as it is currently planned.
In addition, candidate John Mason (R), who is seeking the Delegate seat
from the 37th District (which includes the southern portion of the
Metro station), provided a statement, which in part notes that,
"Proposed increased densities must take into account the already
existing nearby neighborhoods, taking care not to worsen the
traffic conditions."
"FairGrowth very much appreciates the concern of
Delegate Shannon, Mr. Hyland, and all of the officials and candidates
who are looking out for commuters, schoolchildren, the environment,
parks, and stable neighborhoods" said William S. Elliott, FairGrowth's
spokesman. "Genuine
transit-oriented development is the common goal. However, members
of the public across the county have pointed out glaring
discrepancies that make the current plan a genuine example of
over-development, and not true Transit-oriented
development. It is heartening to see candidates and officials of both parties taking the concerns of Fairfax
residents seriously."
